Burns has held executive positions at Marsh & McLennan, energy company Mirant, and Delta Airlines. She was criticized for receiving excessive pay and perks while at Mirant and Delta; in addition, following her departure from Delta, she sued the airline in an effort to maintain the free lifetime first-class airfares that she received as a benefit while she was an executive.
She has been a member of the Walmart Board of Directors since 2003.
